Kavalan’s Wonder Whisky Wins Three Trophies in Just Two Years
TAIPEI, TAIWAN, July 26, 2017 – Kavalan, Taiwan’s premier whisky, has yet again claimed the most prestigious award in its category, this time at the International Wine and Spirit Competition (IWSC) announced on July 26.
Within two years, this makes it a total of three Trophies for the Kavalan Solist Ex-Bourbon Single Cask Strength, which was also awarded a Trophy at the International Spirits Challenge (ISC) for the second consecutive year in early July.
The Kavalan CEO Mr YT Lee said the Ex-Bourbon had now been named the best World Wide whisky by two highly respected competitions.
“From the time we were pioneering whisky 10 years ago to now, quality has always been our priority because our mission is to produce a world-class whisky in Taiwan,” Mr Lee said.
The Ex-Bourbon also scooped a Gold Outstanding and another four Kavalan whiskies were awarded IWSC Golds:
- Solist Moscatel Sherry Single Cask Strength Single Malt Whisky
- Solist Vinho Barrique Single Cask Strength Single Malt Whisky
- Kavalan Classic Single Malt Whisky
- Kavalan Distillery Reserve Single Malt Whisky (Peaty Cask) [only available in Taiwan]
As the pioneer of Taiwanese whisky, Kavalan has successively won the industry’s highest awards. Its Solist Amontillado Sherry Single Cask Strength was named the “World’s Best Single Cask Single Malt Whisky” in 2016 by the prestigious World Whiskies Awards (WWA) and its Solist Vinho Barrique won the 2015 “World’s Best Single Malt Whisky.”
Kavalan wins International Spirits Challenge ‘Trophy’ twice in a row
TAIPEI, TAIWAN, July 14, 2017 – Kavalan, Taiwan’s premier whisky, has collected the biggest award in its category at the International Spirits Challenge (ISC) for its Kavalan Solist Ex-Bourbon Single Cask Strength for the second year running.
Only one ISC „Trophy“ is awarded for the top product in each category, representing an “Outstanding Product, [with] Exceptional Quality.”
Kavalan’s technical consultant, the late Dr Jim Swan, who was instrumental in building the brand also received the ISC’s “Lifetime Achievement Award,” the highest accolade for an individual in the spirits industry.
Kavalan CEO Mr YT Lee said Dr Swan’s legacy was alive and continued on at Kavalan.
“When we started making whisky in Taiwan no one had done this before, and it seemed an impossible venture. Luckily, we had the help of the best expert in the industry. By refusing to give up, Kavalan has become recognised for fine whisky, which we owe to Dr Swan. I’d like to dedicate this 2017 Trophy to Dr Swan,” Mr Lee said.
Lots of stewed fruits on the nose. There’s also aged Bourbon notes. Water brings out custard creams. Surprisingly smooth on the palate. The alcohol is very present. It’s like Bourbon infused milk chocolate.
Another nutty, meaty, savoury nose, with sweet notes in the backdrop. Very sweet pruney flavours initially on the palate, with fruit cake and big clove, chilli and dry cinnamon. Walnut and hazelnut on the very dry finish.
A Star is born: Kavalan Solist

Dear fellow whisky lovers and afficionados, the Malt Maniacs have been enjoying and discussing the joys and pleasures of single malt whisky for fifteen years now, ever since The Malt Maniacs was formed in 1997.
Since 2003 we have organised our own whisky competition; MMA (The Malt Maniacs Awards) which we firmly believe has evolved into one of the most important, influential and independent whisky competitons in the annual whisky calendar.
Incense, perfume, cubes of mango, hints of caramel – a cedar tree in summer – the nose is light and balanced. A perfumer’s scent, but desperately easy on the palate. The flavour profile is long ad sweet, gradually morphing from honey into lemon.
Hints of raisin and coconut on the nose, but essentially what we have here is a toffee smoking a cinnamon flavoured cigar. The palate opens with a nice burst of sweet fresh fruit – guava and melon – front to mid palate, after which the wood takes over; a Christmas pine hit, the fruit now acting as flamboyant outriders, the caramels rushing in to fill the gap. The finish is long and dry and punches into the throat.
